When it comes to attracting the next generation of talent, the rules are changing. Gone are the days when salary was the only factor that mattered to job seekers. Today’s younger workers are looking for more from their employers. They want jobs that support allow for personal growth and provide a solid work-life balance.
A recent survey from the National Society of High School Scholars explores what Gen Z values most in a job. With over 10,000 high school students surveyed, the results are clear: health benefits, paid time off, flexible schedules and professional development opportunities top the list of what’s important when considering a future employer.
Health Benefits Top the List
Born between 1997 and 2012, this generation is entering the workforce with distinct expectations and priorities. The pandemic changed their perspectives on what’s important in life and in their careers. Gen Z has been shaped by a world of uncertainty, isolation and increased mental health challenges. As a result, they’re more focused on health – not just physical health, but mental health and overall wellness. The pandemic also highlighted the stress of balancing work and life, and the importance of self-care.
When asked what kind of compensation they value most, 72% of respondents said health benefits were the most important. This is not surprising, especially in the wake of COVID-19, which made health and wellness a top priority for many workers. Offering a health benefits package that includes medical, dental and mental health support can make your company more appealing to young talent who want to take care of their health without breaking the bank.
Gen Z also want time to live their lives, with 63% of respondents saying paid time off was a key factor in choosing an employer. The pandemic shifted many employees’ expectations around work flexibility, and 61% of Gen Z workers say they value flexible hours and will look for jobs that will allow them to manage their own time.
What Exactly Do Gen Z Workers Want?
Gen Z workers want more than basic health insurance. They want comprehensive medical coverage that includes preventive care and access to specialists and services without facing significant out-of-pocket expenses. This generation is also aware of the high cost of healthcare and wants to work for companies that ease the burden of medical expenses. Offering coverage for prescriptions, therapies, and specialized treatments can be a key differentiator when competing for young talent.
Mental health support is also an essential benefit. Gen Z is more open about discussing mental health issues, and they expect employers to be equally open and supportive. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are now must-haves in any health benefits offerings. Including coverage for therapy and counselling services can also show that employers understand the importance of mental health.
Dental and vision benefits have also become an important part of the total benefits package. For many Gen Z employees, these are necessary for maintaining their health and they may even expect them as part of the standard health benefits offering. Gen Z workers are also used to having instant access to information and services, including healthcare. Offering virtual medical visits, where employees can consult with healthcare professionals from the comfort of their homes, is something Gen Z values because it saves time, increases convenience and offers flexibility.
Health benefits are a must-have for attracting and retaining talent. As Gen Z enters the workforce, they expect employers to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage and mental health support.
